Arrival and Orientation Area
The Arrival and Orientation Area gathers visitors upon their arrival to the Park, and points them in the direction of the various amenities and elements. This is also the parking, maintenance, and staging area, and where visitors will find washrooms.
A gathering area adjacent to the existing Tecumseh monuments provides multi-functional space, allowing groups and tours to organize, as well as facilitating ceremonies at the historic markers.
Visitors entering the Orientation Pavilion walk up a pathway that is textured with quotes and statements from the leaders, warriors, and newspapers of the day. These phrases speak to the arising conflict, the overall impact of the war, and the events which led up to the Battle of the Thames.
The Pavilion is an open air hardscape plaza. Surrounding the open space, graphic displays provide detailed information for visitors through text, images, maps and quotations. The displays
will be highly resistant to weather and temperature fluctuations. Visitors will be able to easily explore these introductory displays that provide context and background to the war, its political and social causes, and the events that led up to the Battle of the Thames. The centrepiece to this space will be a topographic model of the Northwest Theatre of War, featuring the places where battles took place. Inset areas will highlight the Lake Erie and Thames Valley regions, related to the retreat that took place in the fall of 1812.
Three special sculptural pieces will be positioned around the space, supporting the themes and content of the displays. These figures will depict Tecumseh, Harrison and Procter, as the leading actors in the War on the Western Front, in particular.
From the pavilion, visitors may exit to one of three themed areas on site: The River Overlook, the Thames Battle area, and the Tecumseh / Confederacy area. Check out our image gallery to see more pictures of the site plans.
